The discovery process involves sifting through barrels of discarded auto and motorcycle parts at engine shops to find these precious metal “bearing shells” that once weathered the harsh elements inside engines.  It was by accident that I discovered these "gems" because I often search for larger car parts that have a sculptural shape. It would have been easy to overlook the bearing shells at first glance because of their simple crescent shape. Yet upon wiping off the grease the amazing metal surface is revealed...a palette of distressed patina resembling a petrified object found in nature - composed of layers of alloys such as copper, aluminum, tin, steel and bronze.  In addition, the original specs, name and year that identify the part’s origin and point in time are stamped within the patterns of the worn metal.

The artistic process involves envisioning a new function for the worn out automotive bearing shells and hand forming them into wearable jewelry and belt buckles that even incorporates other automotive objects such as fan belt lining and vintage emblems and automotive factory tags as embellishments.  With the decline of the automotive industry and car capitols like Detroit - where many of the car parts and tags originated - the jewelry pieces become even more collectible, historic and valuable.
